Level 3 Vocabulary Syllabus

Course Description and Content: This is an beginning/ intermediate level course in vocabulary and idioms. Students will make flashcards and write sentences commonly used vocabulary words in the specific categories of Food/Drink, Household, School, and Geography as well as words they discover in their own weekly studies. We will also cover vocabulary words from the second half of the text Making Connections 2.

Students will use the website/app Quizlet to study the 20 vocab words of the week and to add their new sets of 10 new vocabulary words each week to the class. If students do not want to use Quizlet, then they must make their own flashcards of the 20 words of the week and 10 flashcards for their own words each week.

Course Goals:

 Goal 1: Students will demonstrate gathering and learning personal lists of vocabulary

Goal 2: Students will apply knowledge of context clues to determine meanings of new words

Goal 3: Students will be able to use common academic vocabulary

Goal 4: Students will be able to use English resources to clarify meanings of words

Goal 5: Students will be able to use specific rules for spelling American English vocabulary

Goal 6: Students will demonstrate intermediate written and oral competency with gerunds

Attendance Policy:

Students should be in class and on time. Students will be marked tardy (late) if they arrive 10 minutes after the class begins, and will be marked absent if they arrive 30 minutes after the class begins. Three tardies equals one absence. Students on an F-1 or J-1 visa can jeopardize their visa status after accumulating three absences in any one class. There are no excused absences.

What constitutes a violation of academic integrity:

  • Receiving unauthorized assistance in the preparation of classwork or on an exam or quiz.
  • The unauthorized presence or use of electronic devices, notes, or books during an exam or quiz.
  • Giving, requesting or receiving help from another student on an exam or quiz.
  • Using another student’s previously graded work.
  • Failure to acknowledge ideas borrowed from other sources, failure to use quotation marks when using exact words from another text, and/or cutting and pasting passages from the internet (plagiarism).
  • Submitting the same work, or substantially the same work, in more than one class without the permission of the current professor.

 Grading Policy:

You will receive a letter grade for this course. Your grade will be based on the following:

Professional Conduct & Participation: 10%

            Arriving to class on time

Self-control with technology, avoiding distractions

Awake and alert in class

Asking and answering questions

Participating in group work

Coming to class prepared with paper, pen/pencil, assignments complete

Taking notes and giving the teacher/speaker attention

At the end of the 8 week session you will receive a grade of A, B, C, D, or F. This will help you understand how you have performed in this class during the session. A grade of A, B, or C indicates that you have completed the work and met the course goals and objectives. A grade of D or F indicates that you have not completed all of the work and therefore you have not met the course goals and objectives.

Day 10:  July 2 Week 5 Weather Quiz; Spelling & Work on Idiom Skit

Lesson Plans

1. Students should be given a few minutes to review their vocabulary words for the quiz. This can be done in 5 minutes by reviewing the flashcards in Quizlet.

2. Students will take the Vocab Level 3 Week 5 | Quizlet. (Handouts) They should have no more than 20-25 minutes to complete the quiz. Students who finish early may take a short 5-10 minute break.

3. Students should be put into small groups of 3-4. They will then work on the multiple choice Idioms Level 3 Vocab together. They should be given 10 minutes to work on the quiz. (Handout)

4. Review the answers to the Level 3 Idioms Quiz. Answer questions about any of the idioms.

5. Groups should pick 5-10 idioms from the quiz and create a short skit. Each person must use 1-2 idioms in a natural conversation. Students should work on the skits for the remainder of the class and get help from the teacher with using the idioms correctly. They should write down their skits and be prepared to work on them next week in class. They will present their skits next week.

Students should work in groups of 3-4 on the Idioms Test.

Video Option

Create a short video: 1-3 minutes on a topic of your choice

  • Choose any topic and write a short script for the topic using at least 20 vocab words
  • For the best grade, add music, text and pictures to your video! Look at my examples of student work to create a great video that you can be proud of and share with others!

Vocabulary Class Requirements

  • You must use at least 20 words from our list of vocabulary words
  • You may use the words to write a script and then read the script, or you can use the words as text for the video.
